Dear Grandma, every Wednesday playing Rummikub with a stroopwafel on the side. You always let me think I'd won. I'm going to miss you so much.

Life story
Johanna was born in Zwolle on 12 April 1938, the eldest of five children. Her father kept a vegetable garden on the edge of town, and there she learned early on that with patience and good soil you can grow almost anything. She read to her little brothers and sisters every evening, and it surprised no one when she later became a teacher.
At teacher training college in Deventer she learned not only her profession but also met Gerrit, a friend of her brother's who was always late and always had a joke ready. They married in 1962 in the Grote Kerk in Zwolle. They danced until late into the night, and according to the family, Gerrit brought her coffee in bed every morning until the very end.
In 1964 they moved to Utrecht, to the house on the Lindelaan where Johanna would live for the rest of her life. She started at the Wilhelmina School, where she taught for almost forty years. Anyone who had been in Mrs de Vries's class never forgot it: she knew every child by name, even twenty years later at the bakery. On Friday afternoons she read aloud from De Kameleon, a much-loved Dutch children's series, and she always stopped at the most exciting moment.

For twelve years we walked along the river Vecht every Tuesday. Johanna always brought a flask of coffee, and a story.

Mum, you taught us that a cup of tea and a good conversation can solve almost anything. When I wanted to quit school at sixteen, you put the kettle on, poured two cups and said nothing. Only after the second cup did you ask what was really going on. I stayed, and I have never forgotten it. You were always there: for every move, for the births of Sanne and Daan, and on the hard days after Dad. You never complained, you just got on with it. Thank you for everything, Mum. We love you, and we will plant your tulips again every autumn.

Mrs de Vries taught me to read. I still often think of the stories she read to us at the end of the day.

Every Friday afternoon Mrs de Vries read to us from De Kameleon. Just when it got exciting, she stopped, right on time. We waited all week for Friday.

Every spring, her tulips were the most beautiful in the street. She once gave me a handful of bulbs, and they still come up every year.

Grandma, I'm going to plant tulips for you every spring. The yellow ones, because you liked those best.

Fifty years ago we stood together at the garden gate with our prams. Johanna always had time for a chat, and always a biscuit for the children.
